Why Kiln-Dried Pine

What kiln-drying actually does
Split wood goes into a heated chamber, and steady heat pushes the water out in days instead of the months an outdoor stack needs. Wood drying outside fights coastal Georgia humidity the whole way; a kiln does not care what the weather is doing.
You notice the difference the first night. Dry wood catches from kindling without coaxing and burns instead of hissing while the fire boils water out of it. Less of the load's weight is water, so more of what the truck carries is wood that actually burns. The kiln's heat also deals with insects and mold that can ride into a garage on damp wood.
Why pine, and why we say it plainly
Pine is the wood of this corner of Georgia; it grows around Hinesville and across Liberty and Long County. It splits clean and lights easily, and the kiln finishes the job by drying the sap that gives wet pine its bad name. If you grew up hearing pine belongs in the kindling pile, what you were warned about was green pine: cut, split, and burned while still full of water, so it smoked and gummed things up. Kiln-dried pine is different; the sap is dried out, and it burns hot and clean like the rest of the log.
